Vivian Maier Tribute

Vivian Maier, her incredible story and exceptional street photographs of Chicago from the 1950s have been a huge inspiration to us in recent months.

While on a job in the Windy City a few weeks ago, we had an afternoon to ourselves and decided to wander around, taking photographs of strangers in an attempt to channel our inner Vivian Maier.

The following images are our humble tribute to her and the fearless approach she took in photographing people she encountered on the streets of Chicago.

Check out the story/work of Vivan Maier here: http://www.vivianmaier.com/

Kelley McRae

One day, Kelley McRae and her husband Matt decided to pack up all their earthly belongings and hit the open road traveling and singing up and down the east coast.

Recently, they blew into Lynchburg in their retro VW Westfalia bus and let us photograph them for the afternoon.

If you have not checked out Kelley McRae’s music yet, or you would like to book her for a show in your town, here you go. You’re welcome: www.kelleymcrae.com

Special thanks go out to Karissa Grantham for Styling/Hair/Makeup.

Stetson Jenkins

Had some free time this past weekend. Went out with good friend and talented model Stetson Jenkins. He has pretty epic hair.

Big thanks to Karissa Grantham for all the styling and wrestling with Stetson’s hair.

Some of the images you see are 35mm film. Kodak Portra 400NC to be exact- one of our faves.

Spotted: James David’s Website

Some DuckDuck photos have been spotted on James David’s website!

You might recognize him from GLEE. Or perhaps you’ve seen him singing on tour with Katie Perry? Super freaking talented. :)

Here’s a behind the scenes video we took at his shoot:

Vanessa: Lifestyle Test

Testing is a very important part of our creative process. We had been discussing using our good friend and talented model Vanessa Reinarz for quite some time on a number of upcoming shoots, but because we had never worked with her in a more “formal” shooting environment, we decided to first do a test so we could get comfortable with each other.

Also, we have been using quite a bit more film on shoots, quite simply, because who doesn’t love the look of film? For this shoot our film of choice was the Kodak Portra 400NC. It has some delicious tones and we highly recommend purchasing this film type if you are into 35mm film portraiture.

Civil Wars + Madi Diaz

Two of our favorite bands (not to mention just all around great people) are Madi Diaz and The Civil Wars. They recently had a show in Vienna, Virginia and we had the opportunity to catch up with them and do a mini-shoot right before the show.

Below are some images from the day.

Special Thanks to the people at Jammin Java. They were very accommodating and even charged a camera battery for us during the show.

And this would be our bad-ass assistant Ryan Zimont. A close friend and great photographer as well:

Special Note: We are hosting Madi Diaz in her first live appearance in Lynchburg this Saturday the 18th of September. If you want more information on the “Half-Moon” concert, please click here.

Americana 2

A year ago, when DuckDuck collective first came together, we posted a blog entitled “Americana”. This was the first time that the three of us had ever combined our imagery together into a single project.

“Americana 2″ is a look into some of the more personal images and portraits we have taken over the last year as a team. It has been a beautiful ride and we are so glad so many of you have enjoyed it with us.

Rifle Paper Company

A few months back we got a call from our old friend Anna Bond who runs the famous Rifle Paper Company. Long story short, she needed press photos for some upcoming magazine interviews she is doing. We were happy to oblige, so we flew down and spent a day in her studio taking pictures of her and her team.

Special thanks to Casey Friend for helping assist on this shoot.

Cotton Wedding

After twelve years of friendship, Weston Cotton and Blake Airdo said “I do,” and we had the privilege to photograph their beautiful wedding in the ideal location of West Palm Beach, Florida. The following are some of our favorite photographs from the celebration. Make sure to check out the bouquet… it was made out of cotton after Blake’s new last name :)

A special thanks to Derek and Lauren Bennion for all of their help and assistance during the wedding.

Renee Yohe

Two weeks ago we traveled down to our second home, Orlando, for a shoot with the fabulous Renee Yohe. This was a really fun collaborative effort that lasted into the wee hours of the night.

Special thanks go out to our amazing friends Kate Lynch (check out her blog here: http://thekatedarling.blogspot.com/) and Kasey Snavely (incredible H/M artist)

Enjoy!

We have also started to incorporate much more medium format imagery into our shoots. The images below were taken with a Yashica- A Dual Reflex camera using Provia and Velvia 120 film.

Funny Girl Lianna Carrera

We wish we could do justice with our words to Lianna Carrera. Not only is she a rising star in the world of comedy, but she is simply a fantastic human being. Giving life and laughter through her natural ability as a comedian, Lianna hopes to share her story and connect with people as she aspires towards becoming a force within comedy.

Initially, Lianna only had need for head-shots as she was heading to Chicago to chase her dreams. But we ended up doing several shoots with her because, quite frankly, there were just so many ways she could be captured. Below are a few our favorite frames from our time with her:

Note: If you haven’t already, please check out videos of her standup here: http://www.liannacarrera.com/

Broadside is an up-and-coming band out of Richmond, VA who we had the privilege of photographing this past weekend. Kate and Brooks

Orlando is essentially a second home for us. Filled with a beautiful community of talented friends. A few days ago we spent the afternoon with two of our favorites, Kate Lynch and Brooks Potteiger (check out their work, Kate is an excellent write, Brooks a fantastic photographer).

We also were greatly aided by the exceptional styling prowess of Dana Roquemore. She not only is a talented wardrobe stylist, but also has a great vintage clothing shop you should check out: http://www.otherpeoplesproperty.com/.

Enough belaboring this post. Below are a few shots we took in downtown Orlando with Kate and Brooks. They are a little too good looking…

Here are some photographs featuring the Spring Collection of Storm and Stress, all designed by the beautiful and talented Deidre Stone.

None of this would’ve been possible without an incredible crew. A special thanks to Sam Gravitt and Dorothy of Fusion Salon for hair and make-up, Ryan Zimont for assisting, and Joshua Stone for video and moral support.
